When Confucius came to Qi state, Duke Jing of Qi state asked how to rule the state. Confucius suggested that he should save financial resources. Duke Jing was very satisfied and wanted to bestow the farmland of Nixi on Confucius. Premier Yan Ying opposed and said, "These Confucian scholars are eloquent but ignorance of law. They are arrogant and self-righteous, and don't want to be subordinate to others. They advocate funerals, and always spend money to bury the dead, which are bad customs. They travel around and depend on others. We can't rely on them to manage the state. Since the death of the sages and the decline of the Zhou Dynasty, music and rites have been incomplete for a long time. Now Confucius dresses himself up and stipulates cumbersome etiquette of superiority and inferiority, and meticulous manners. There's no limit to learn his etiquette. Your majesty, do you really want to use his set of etiquette to change the customs of Qi state? I'm afraid it's not a good way to guide our people." After that, Duke Jing still treated Confucius respectfully, but no longer asked him about rites and music. Later, a Da fu of Qi state planned to murder Confucius. Confucius told Duke Jing about it, but Duke Jing said, "I'm too old to offer you help." As a result, Confucius had to leave Qi state and return to Lu state.
