When Confucius was in Wei state, he heard that Qi state was about to attack Lu state, which made him very anxious. So, he summoned his disciples and said, "Lu state is our motherland, and is where our ancestors' tombs are. Now our motherland is in danger of being subjugated. Shouldn't you step forward bravely to protect it?" Therefore, Zigong went lobbying in Qi state, Wu state, Yue state and Jin state. He succeeded in lobbing Wu state to save Lu state, Qi state and Yue state to attack Wu state. He finally saved Lu state as Qi state was defeated by Wu state. However, Wu state was attacked secretly by Yue state and was defeated. In the end, Jin state was getting stronger and Yue state sought hegemony. After this, Confucius said, "You should be careful of what you say, because blandishments could easily damage faith." Later, historian Sima Qian commented on what Zigong did and said, "What Zigong did saved Lu state, made Qi state be in chaos, destroyed Wu state, made Jin state strong and Yue state dominate. What he did broke the existing condition, and the situation of the five states have all changed in the next ten years."
