When Confucius was the Si kou of Lu state, there was a case between a father and his son. Confucius didn't judge the case, instead, he imprisoned them for three months. Later, the father asked to drop the case, and Confucius pardoned them both. Lord Ji Huanzi was very unsatisfied when he heard about it. Confucius sighed and said, "It violates the principle of rites that the rulers do not adopt correct ruling manners and killing innocent people. Judging these cases instead of advocating filial virtue and educating people is actually killing innocent people!"
