Duke Ai of Lu state entertained Confucius and asked him how to govern the state. Confucius replied, "The most important thing is to make the people rich and abundant, and long-lived. If you reduce the corvee and taxes, the people will be rich and abundant. And if you advocate ethics and rites, and alienate evil things, the people will be able to live a long life."
