When Zigao was an official in Wei state, he once sentenced someone and cut his feet according to law. Soon, when a riot broke out in Wei state, it happened that the man was guarding the city gate, but helped Zigao to run away. Zigao was very confused. The man said, "I deserved to have my feet cut because I committed a crime. At that time, I knew you wanted to pardon me. When I was tortured, you looked very serious and unhappy. You had no selfish motives towards me. You were born to be a gentleman. That's why I admire you." After listening to it, Confucius said, "As an official, you treated people equally according to the laws, which is very nice. Remember, a man of benevolence and altruism would be awarded with gratitude while a man of ruthlessness would be faced with many enemies."
