Nanjing Confucius Temple

Located on the north bank of the Qinhuai River in Qinhuai District of Nanjing City, Nanjing Confucius Temple is the place for people to worship the great sage Confucius. It is the first highest institution and one of the four major Confucius temples in China, the hub of ancient Chinese culture and a gathering place of history and humanity of Nanjing. It was not only the cultural and educational center of Nanjing during the Ming and Qing Dynasties; it was also the cultural and educational building complex which ranked the first in the southeast provinces in China. The temple is a group of large-scale ancient buildings, which is mainly composed of Confucius Temple, academy and examination office, covering a large area. It was known as a famous scenic spot in Qinhuai area and had become a distinctive scenic area of the ancient capital Nanjing. From the Six Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, most of the aristocratic families lived nearby, so there is an idiom called “Liuchao jinfen”, which describes the prosperous scene of the Six Dynasties. It is the largest traditional ancient downtown street in China.
