Qufu Confucius Temple is located in the west of the drum tower in the center of Qufu city. It was first built in the 7th year of Duke Ai of the State of Lu (478 BC), and was supplemented and expanded in successive dynasties. Since the Western Han Dynasty, successive emperors have been conferring posthumous titles on Confucius, and the scale of Qufu Confucius Temple has become larger and larger. Now it is the largest Confucius Temple in China. Most of the existing buildings were completed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, covering an area of 0.218 square kilometers with nine courtyards. In the temple, there are 464 halls, altars, pavilions and other buildings. Surrounded by red walls and with turrets at the four corners, it was built in the style of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Qufu Confucius Temple is called an “isolated example” in the history of world architecture by architect Liang Sicheng.
