In the spring of the 14th year of the reign of Duke Ai of Lu state, Duke Ai went hunting in Ju county. A servant of Lord Shusun killed a strange beast. Hearing this, Confucius, at his 71 years old, went to have a look. He said this is a Kylin, a benevolent animal, but it is dead. Facing the Kylin, Confucius cried bitterly, "Why were you here? Born out of my time, I think my thoughts is approaching to the end." Confucius recorded this in the Spring and Autumn Annals, the history book of Lu state, with the title Killing a Kylin in a Hunt, and stopped the compilation of the Spring and Autumn Annals.
