To mark the 90th anniversary of the victory of the Long March of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army, the documentary The Long March Memories Preserved in Shanghai, jointly produced by SMG Real Media, the Memorial Site of the Fourth National Congress of the CPC, the Memorial Site of the League of Left-Wing Writers and the Shanghai Lu Xun Museum, premiered on Dragon TV on the evening of October 22.

Shanghai was not along the route of the Long March, yet it maintains profound ties with this historic expedition. Centered on the transcribed manuscript The 12,500 Kilometers Long March preserved at the Shanghai Lu Xun Museum, the documentary looks back on stories of the Long March recorded by more than 40 Red Army officers and soldiersand unfolds that magnificent journey through a delicate and focused perspective.
The manuscript’s creation and circulation are closely bound up with Shanghai. Ding Ling, the first renowned writer leaving Shanghai for Yan’ an, received the task to compile and edit these manuscripts in northern Shanxi Province. Feng Xuefeng, Secretary of the Party League of the League of Left-Wing Writers and a Long March participant who completed the entire march, secretly brought the transcribed manuscript from northern Shanxi back to Shanghai for publication. Later, due to changing circumstances, the manuscript was entrusted to Xie Danru, a left-wing cultural figure, for safekeeping in secret for decades. It was eventually acquired and preserved by the Shanghai Lu Xun Museum.
The documentary team explored the profound connections between Shanghai and the transcribed manuscript and interviewed descendants of many witnesses, including Jiang Zulin (son of Ding Ling), Tong Danning (son of Tong Xiaopeng), Feng Lie (grandson of Feng Xuefeng), Shu Wan (grandson of Shu Tong), and Xie Zongmin (grandson of Xie Danru). Many of these oral history interviews are released to the public for the first time. The documentaryalso unveils a batch of precious archival footage for the first time, such as images of Ding Ling in Shanxi during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. These distinguisheddocuments once again tell the enduring spirit of the Long March.
